Kuelap Fortress was designed to be a death trap for attackers.  The walls are sheer stone, and the three narrow entrances are easily defended from above.  The Incans did manage to conquer the place (after many tries), but the Spanish showed up a little later and wiped everyone out with cavalry and diseases.
