The next day, we drove for three hours up a windy mountain road to visit Kuélap Fortress, an ancient Chachapoyas stronghold perched high above the countryside.  This rivals Machu Picchu in awesomeness and was built with three times more stone than the Great Pyramid, but its isolation and relative obscurity meant that we had the place nearly to ourselves.
