Nearby was the Monastery of San Francisco, famous for its catacombs that are still full of the bones of the thousands buried beneath the church.  For a donation, people could get themselves buried here, supposedly giving them quick passage to Heaven.  It was a bit disturbing, first that they would do that in the old days, and second that they were now letting tourists pay to come in a gawk at the remains.  A few of the people I saw it with were quite offended.
